Sevierville Fire Department Holding Child Car Seat Safety Inspection

Parents and childcare providers can soon have their child car seat locally inspected by certified technicians to ensure it meets safety requirements.

The City of Sevierville Fire Department (SFD) has scheduled a Child Car Seat Safety Inspection on July 30, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Collier Drive Sub-Station (423 Collier Drive) in Sevierville.

“Nationally, over 90% of child car safety seats are improperly installed,” the Sevierville Fire Department said. “In fact, over 40% of child fatalities in traffic accidents are due to improperly installed child car safety seats.”

Certified technicians will inspect child car seats for proper installation, demonstrate installation techniques, and advise parents and caregivers on choosing the correct car seat for the age and size of their child.

They will ensure car seats meet current safety standards and also look for wear, damage from previous accidents, and missing parts.

Many car seats may be unsafe due to manufacturer safety recalls. Technicians can help determine if car seats are subject to a safety recall.

Graco Children’s Products recalled 4.2 million toddler car seats due to faulty harness buckles earlier this year and in June expanded the Graco car seat recall to include 1.9 million infant car seats. Consumers with a Graco car seat can visit gracobucklerecall.com to see if their child’s car seat is affected by the recall.

It is important to always register your car seat to receive notifications if the manufacturer issues a recall for the product.

In addition to child car seat inspections, Sevierville Fire Department firefighters will also be available to provide fire safety tips, demonstrate proper use of fire extinguishers and installation of smoke alarms.
