Microchipping is a great way to ensure a pet has permanent identification. Each pet microchip costs only $15 at the PawsPlus low-cost pet clinics in Sevierville and includes lifetime registration.
After a vet inserts a microchip the size of a grain of rice under a pet’s skin, hand-held scanners used by shelter organizations and veterinarians can read the microchip if a pet is found and scanned. The scanner will read the microchip’s number and the shelter or vet can locate the registered owner’s contact information, making the reunion of the lost pet and its owner possible.
The success of a microchip relies on a veterinarian or shelter scanning the pet and retrieving owner information. For this reason it is important to keep your pet’s microchip registration information current if you move or change your phone number. Still, a microchip should be used in combination with a collar and pet ID tag. A pet ID tag is still the easiest way for a Good Samaritan who finds a lost pet to contact the owner.
