Fears of Listeria contamination have prompted a nationwide Sabra hummus recall.
Sabra Dipping Co., the largest seller of hummus in the United States, announced on April 8, 2015 that the company is recalling about 30,000 cases of Sabra Classic Hummus sold nationwide because the product may pose a health risk. According to the company, a routine, random sample collected from a retailer on March 30 by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
People who eat food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may develop Listeriosis, a serious and sometimes fatal infection. Those most at risk for infection are young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages, stillbirth, and premature delivery in women who are pregnant, or life-threatening infection to their newborn baby. Listeriosis symptoms vary in different people infected with the bacterium.
There have been no reports of illness associated with the product.
