Certain in-shell and shelled pistachios sold under the Wonderful Pistachios, Trader Joe’s and Paramount Farms brands have been recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
Wonderful Pistachios, of Lost Hills, Calif., issued a voluntary recall on March 9, 2016 of certain varieties of pistachios due to a risk of Salmonella contamination and directed its retailers to pull the affected products from store shelves. Because of the long shelf life of these products, consumers are advised to check if the recall affects any packages of pistachios in their pantry.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health officials across nine states are investigating an outbreak of the Salmonella Montevideo strain that has infected eleven people since December, including two people who required hospitalization. According to the agency, most people affected reported eating pistachios the week prior to falling ill. Laboratory testing found the strain in samples of raw pistachios collected from Paramount Farms, where Wonderful pistachios are grown.
“Wonderful Pistachios takes food safety matters very seriously and is working closely with health officials to identify the source of the problem,” the company said. “In an effort to further enhance our food safety program and ensure the health and well being of our consumers, we have, effective immediately, proactively increased our sampling frequencies and lot size testing. The implementation of these augmented safety protocols further exceeds established industry best practices and bolsters our long-standing commitment to producing the highest quality, most wholesome and safest pistachios in the world.”
People with salmonellosis may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, this infection can result in severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
These pistachios were distributed across the United States and in Canada. Consumers can identify the Wonderful Pistachios, Trader Joe’s and Paramount Farms brand recalled pistachios by locating the code number on the packaging:

Wonderful Pistachios is offering consumers a full refund. They should discard the nuts and return only the product packaging with the recalled lot code to the place of purchase or send to Wonderful Pistachios, 13646 Hwy 33, Lost Hills, CA 93249. Also included in the pistachios recall are Favorites Natural Pistachios, a 4.5 ounce stand up pouch bag with a UPC 0 38445 12286 5 and a date code of 15 Feb 2017 and 16 Feb 2017. This product was distributed nationally through convenience stores. Consumers should not consume this product as it may be contaminated with Salmonella. They should destroy it or return the product to the point of purchase. Consumers with questions should call 1-800-860-5464.
Nature’s Eats Natural Pistachio Kernels are also included in the pistachios recall. This product is an 8 oz. bag with Lot Code 40262001 and Best Buy Date of 1/4/2017. Consumers are urged to not eat the recalled pistachios, and to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions or concerns may contact the company at 1-844-571-5555.
