A massive canned tuna recall has been issued for Chicken of the Sea and Bumble Bee brands because potential contamination could cause life-threatening illness.
Select varieties of Chicken of the Sea and Bumble Bee brand canned tuna are subject to a tuna recall after routine inspection at a packing facility found that an equipment malfunction may have left the products undercooked. This failure in the commercial sterilization process could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens. No illnesses associated with these products have been reported.
“The health and safety of our consumers is our number one priority. As soon as we discovered the issue, we took immediate steps to initiate this voluntary recall, alerting our retail customers that received the product and instructing them to remove it from store shelves,” said Shue Wing Chan, president of Tri-Union Seafoods LLC that makes Chicken of the Sea.
The recalled tuna was distributed to retailers nationwide. 2,745 cases (equal to 107,280 cans) of Chicken of the Sea canned are subject to the recall. The recall of Bumble Bee tuna is far larger at 31,579 cases.
Consumers can identify the products affected by this tuna recall by finding the UPC on the label, and Best By date and lot code on the bottom of the can.

Chicken of the Sea Brand 5 oz. canned chunk light tuna in oil sold at retailers nationwide in single cans between Feb. 10, 2016 and March 16, 2016.
