Clingmans Dome Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park was closed for five hours Monday following a fatal motor vehicle accident.

According to park officials, rangers responded to a report of a single-car, motor vehicle accident on Clingmans Dome Road at about 12:30 p.m. on July 15, 2019. The park’s technical Search and Rescue Team, Cherokee Tribal EMS, and Cherokee Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene.

A 2009 Chevy Cobalt, driven by 37-year-old Timothy Patrick James McCauley, of Farmington, Mo., left the roadway about one mile east of the Clingmans Dome Parking Area and landed approximately 50 feet below. McCauley died as a result of his injuries. Lifestar transported the passenger, 38-year-old Angela Walker, to UT Medical Center in Knoxville. No additional details are available at this time.

Another similar fatality on Clingmans Dome Road occurred in April 2018.
