Sevier County School Closure Extended at Gov. Lee Recommendation

The Sevier County School System announced that the current school closure will be extended for another month to slow the spread of COVID-19 cases.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, recommended all public schools remain closed until April 24. The Sevier County School System confirmed on Wednesday that it would comply with the request, instead of resuming on April 1 as scheduled.

Penny Schwinn, Tennessee education commissioner, said the state is working with PBS to produce educational content for students as they remain out of the classroom. That content will begin to roll out on April 6.

“The Department of Education team will continue to work closely with our districts as they serve students and families during this time,” Schwinn said. “We are committed to doing whatever we can to support our district leaders as they make the necessary decisions to ensure students can continue to access critical meal and other services, as well as receive high-quality academic instruction while they are out of school.”
