Certain Kidde brand disposable fire extinguishers are being recalled because they may fail to work as intended during a fire.
Kidde, a manufacturer of fire safety products, is recalling 4.6 million disposable fire extinguishers due to a faulty black plastic valve that can prevent the fire extinguishers from fully discharging when the lever is repeatedly pressed and released during a fire emergency, posing a risk of injury.
While no injuries have been reported, Kidde has received 11 reports of the these fire extinguishers failing to discharge as expected.
Recalled Kidde fire extinguishers have a red, white or silver colored cylinder with a Zytel® black plastic valve. Consumers may have purchased these fire extinguishers at Home Depot, Menards, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide, and online from August 2013 through November 2014 for between $18 and $65, and about $200 for model XL 5MR.
This Kidde recall affects the following 31 models of disposable fire extinguishers. The model number is on a nameplate affixed to the front of the fire extinguisher.

An ABC or BC rating can be found to the right of the nameplate.
Manufacture dates included in the recall are July 23, 2013 through October 15, 2014. Locate the 10-digit date code stamped on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom. Digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format. Date codes for recalled units manufactured in 2013 are XXXX 20413 X through XXXX 36513 X and 2014 are XXXX 00114 X through XXXX 28814 X.
In addition to 4.6 million Kidde fire extinguishers recalled in the United States, 175,000 are recalled in Canada.
Consumers who determine they have a recalled Kidde fire extinguisher should contact Kidde at (855) 283-7991 for a replacement.
